Alex Hulme Foundation – the local, family-run charity

The Alex Hulme Foundation is another of our Trafford Business and Community Awards 2021 shortlist.

Dave Hulme states: “We are delighted, thrilled and humbled to learn that Alex’s legacy has not only been nominated but shortlisted for the Charity or Community Group Award at the Trafford Business & Community Awards 2021.   We are really looking forward to the event and the opportunity to recognise the fantastic work which is being undertaken by local businesses and groups.”

We asked Dave to share some further information about the background to the charity, its work, and how people can get involved to support not only them (but all charities) in our current situation.

Enhancing Research into Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Children

Following the loss of our 12yr old son Alex on 5th September 2011 to Non Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), we formed the Alex Hulme Foundation as a legacy to him in recognition of the courage and bravery he showed during his illness, and also we knew he would want to help others who found themselves in the same position he did.

NHL is not a high priority for funding, and in 2011 there was no current research into children’s NHL. Therefore the purpose of the Alex Hulme Foundation is to aid research in this field with the aim of firstly improving the treatment protocols to target individual needs, improving the outcome for survivors and, of course with the ultimate aim of finding a cure.

Since 2011 we have raised over £475,000 with every penny going to fund research at Cambridge University. We have no employees and take no personal expenses.

Together We Are Making A Difference

We have provided equipment for the laboratory and are now funding PhD students to further our research. The first made significant progress with her work being published in early 2021 and has already received worldwide acclaim. The second student has enhanced the work undertaken and has gained significant results and achieved exciting developments in the field of improved treatment protocols.

We aim to continue this funding path as it is the best hope for successful research.  However to do this we need to raise at least £50,000 per annum.  We therefore welcome any offers of support to help achieve the aims of the Foundation in Alex’s name. Thank you.

How you can support the foundation now

The last few months have been difficult for the Foundation as, like most charities, donations have taken a hit as people have been unable to do fundraising events. However, people may be interested to know that there are many alternative ways to help charities, such as Alex’s legacy, especially as we are now doing a lot of our shopping online.

Many sites now give a donation to a designated charity simply by clicking through to a store from their site. For example:

· Sign up and identify the cause to support as the Alex Hulme Foundation to support.

· Search for your store (M&S, eBay, Clinique, Amazon etc.) and click through to their online store from the Giving Machine.

· The Giving Machine will then donate a percentage of your spend to the Foundation at no extra cost to you.

  • Amazon have their own affiliate site known as Smile Amazon Rather than going straight to Amazon, go to Smile Amazon and shop in the normal way.  Amazon make a donation to a designated charity you have nominated of which the Foundation is one.
  • The same applies to eBay. When you sell on eBay, you can donate a percentage of the money you receive to the Foundation and eBay automatically pay that through PayPal.
  • You can also donate made from sales on Ziffit.

Of course, anyone who wishes to support the work of the Foundation can do so by making a single or regular donation via Virgin Money Giving.

Don’t forget to add that you are happy to apply Gift Aid to any donation. This gives an extra 25p in every £1 donated at no extra cost to you.

Thank you.
