Smart Divorce is based in Altrincham and was founded in 2018 by Chartered Financial Planner, Tamsin Caine, under financial planning company Smart Financial.
It is also one of the shortlisted businesses in our Trafford Business and Community Awards 2021 – in the Professional Services category. To help provide more details about this local business, how it started and how it can help you, we asked its founder Tamsin to share some information with us.
Why did you start the business?
It was created to help couples and individuals to come to a fair financial agreement without a fight. Having experienced divorce herself, both as a child of divorcing parents and the ending of her own marriage, Tamsin feels strongly that aiming for an amicable settlement is the best way forward, where possible.
How has the business grown?
Over the past 3 years, the website has featured guest blogs from many local divorce professionals, who Tamsin collaborates with. The blog has recently achieved a place in the top 10 UK divorce blogs. In addition, Tamsin hosts The Smart Divorce Podcast, interviewing other specialists in divorce and guests who have come through divorce positively themselves. More recently, she helped to form Facebook support group, “Separation, Divorce and Dissolution UK”, to help answer questions and provide information to those going through a relationship breakdown.
How do couples feel when a marriage breaks down?
Deciding to separate, or one person wanting to end the marriage, can be a hugely stressful time, filled with fear. The fear of not knowing what’s ahead. Future plans are no longer the same. They may be worried about what happens with the house, with money and with the children. At this stage, Smart Divorce can help to gather your financial information together and make sense of it, including pensions. They can help you to work out what is needed to pay for the future lifestyles of each or both parties.
How can Smart Divorce help?
Smart Divorce often work with people who have not looked after the money in their relationship. They help clients to understand financial products and also what they need from the financial settlement in order to move forward. Clients then enter negotiations feeling informed and empowered to agree a fair split of the assets, enabling them to begin their new chapter financially secure. They often work as part of mediation, the collaborative process and with family lawyers during the financial settlement negotiations.
Helping into the future
Towards the end of the divorce, they can help with the implementation of a pension sharing order. It is important to understand how the pension share can provide retirement income. For those over 55, there may be options to take income immediately or use this money to help with buying a new property. Making informed decisions, knowing the impact this will have on the future is vital. We are here to guide, inform and advise through this time. We love helping clients at the end of their divorces to plan their new chapter. Some find it difficult to see ahead to begin with, but we help them to take small steps towards their ideal future life.
